Elliot Lake

Elliot Lake Elliot Lake is located about 2 hours from Sudbury, smack dab in the middle between Sudbury and Sault Saint Marie.

Who would have figured, Elliot Lake is actually a nice little town with an abundance of high cliffs (relatively speaking) to climb. Right in town there's Horne Lake, which if you look across you can see some awfully crumbly looking cliffs. However, up close these cliffs are amazingly solid and up to 30 meters. Down the road as you're leaving town you can take the turn off for the golf course and ecounter a large section of cliff band which is probably well over 30 meters high. The town itself is really nice for being an old mining community, turned into a retirement community.

The personally explored are the cliffs across Horne Lake (the lake right in town). You can either bring a canoe and just paddle across the lake (the preferred option), or walk around the lake until you reach the cliffs. If you're walking, head south out of the parking lot on the trail (towards Timmy's) and walk until you see a trail head left across a boardwalk. Take the boardwalk across the boggy section of the lake, and turn left at the end. After a few minutes you'll see a trail veer off to the right, take it up as far as you can go then head left. You'll eventually follow the trail along the cliff tops. There's an easy walk down below the power line pole.

The other cliff at the lake area, containing the climb "T-Bone", is actually off to the right as your ascending the steep section of the trail on the way in. Other cliffs can be found near the golf course, if you take the golf course turn off on the way into town, and head down the road until you see large section of cliff on the left. And you certainly get the feeling if you explored the area more you'd find more and more cliffs.

Getting There: To get there head east on Hwy 17 for about 125km, until reaching hwy 108 (just after cutler), turn right and head north until you roll into town. If you head down the main drag in town you'll pass by Tim Hortons and McDonalds, then come to a parking lot for the miner's memorial. For the climbs across the lake this is your parking spot.
